MP2016 ? 4 2 v, 30ma, low pow e r, linear regulator MP2016 rev.1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 7 10/10/2011 mps proprietar y information. pate nt protec ted. un authorized photo c op y and d uplication prohibited. ? 2011 mps. all rights reserved. operation -- + in v ref 1.23v fb gnd shnd out 1 3 4 2 5 figure 1?functional block diagram the MP2016 is a linear regula t or designe d primarily for high input voltage applications. th e MP2016 has an ou tput that is ad justable from 1.2v to 40 v with a simple resist or divider. the maxi mum p o wer output current is a function of the packag e ?s maximu m power dissipation for a given tempe r ature. the mp201 6 uses external feedback, allowin g the user to set the output voltage with an external resistor divider. the typical fb pin threshold is 1.23v. the ic enters shutdo wn mode when shdn is low. in shutdown mode, the pass transistor, control circuitry, reference and all biases turn off, reducing the supply current to <2a. connect shdn to in for automatic start up. the peak ou tput current is limited to 50ma, which exceeds the 30ma recommended continuou s output curr ent. the o u tput can be shorted to ground for 30 seconds without damaging the part. when the junction temperature is too high, th e thermal sensor sends a signal to the control logic that will shut down the ic. the ic will restart when the temperature has suff iciently cooleds. the maximum power dissipation is dependent on the thermal resistance of the case and the circuit board, the temperature difference between the die junction and the ambient air, and the rate of air flow. the gnd pin and exposed pad must be connected to the ground plane for proper dissipation.
MP2016 ? 4 2 v, 30ma, low pow e r, linear regulator MP2016 rev.1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 8 10/10/2011 mps proprietar y information. pate nt protec ted. un authorized photo c op y and d uplication prohibited. ? 2011 mps. all rights reserved. appli c ation information component sel ection setting the output voltage set the output voltage of the MP2016 by using a resistor divider as shown: MP2016 3 4 2 out vout fb figure 2?MP2016 w i t h external resistor divider choose r2=250k ? to maintain a 5a minimu m load. calcu l ate the v a lue for r 1 using th e following eq uation: ou t v r1 r 2 1 1.23v ?? = ? ?? ?? input capacitor for proper operation, place a ceramic capacit or (c1) between 1f an d 10f of dielectric ty pe x 5 r or x 7 r between the input pin and grou nd. larger values in this ra nge will help improve line transient response. output cap acitor for stable o peration, use a ceramic capacitor (c 2) of type x 5 r or x 7 r between 1f and 10f. larger values in this ra nge will help improve load transient re sponse an d reduce noise. outp ut capacitors o f other diele c tric types may be use d, but are not recommen ded as their capacitan ce can deviate greatly from their rated value over temperature. to improve load transie nt response , add a small ceramic (x 5 r , x 7 r or y5v dielectr ic) 22nf fee d forward capacitor in pa rallel with r1. the feed forward capacitor is not require d for stable operation. output noi se the m p 2016 will ex hibit noise o n the outp u t during normal operation . this noise is negligible for m o st application s . howev e r, in application s that include analog-to-d igital converters (adcs) of more tha n 12 bits, o ne needs to consider th e adc?s powe r supply rejection spe c ifications. the feed f o rward cap a citor c3 a c ross r1 will significantly reduce the output noise.
